“The Waterman’s Daughter” focuses on the life of an unconventional and original woman named Lilyan Stratton Corbin, an author, actress, and philanthropist who grew up in Crisfield, MD, during the Chesapeake Bay Oyster boom in the late 1800s.
This play serves as a homecoming of sorts. The Corbin Studio and Gallery, formerly the Corbin library, is home to Lilyan’s ashes. The Corbin library was built and dedicated to Lilyan’s memory by her husband in 1930. Lilyan’s remains were removed from the former library in when the building was closed with the opening of the new, modern library at 100 Collins Street in 2016. Her ashes were recently returned from the Bradshaw & Sons Funeral Home to the Corbin in a formal procession led by a hearse, coinciding with the reopening of the building.
“The Waterman’s Daughter” follows the Lilyan’s life story from when she ran away from home in 1898 at age 16 to her success on stage and screen; from her marriage to the silent film star Frank Campeau to her books Reno, Homing, The Wife’s Lessons, and The Feminine Philosophy.
Created and performed by Katrina Kadoski, this one-woman multi-media musical drama focuses in on Lilyan’s unique character, and is told through the lens of her reluctant sister Rose. Featuring seven original new songs, this inspiring story unfolds through music, archival photos, original drawings, dramatic narrative, news articles and letters from Lilyan. Katrina began researching and writing the play during her Artist in Residence stay at the Nelson Homestead in Crisfield in 2016.
This event is part of the programming for the Smithsonian Institution traveling exhibit Water/Ways coming to the Tawes Museum at 3 Ninth Street in Crisfield from December 7 through January 18th. Information on this and other Crisfield Arts & Entertainment District events is available at CrisfieldArts.org
Wine, beer and soft drinks will be on sale and proceeds benefit the Crisfield Arts and Entertainment District.
