Worcester Youth and Family Counseling Services, Inc. (WYFCS) is a non-profit organization serving the community since 1975 located in Berlin, Maryland. WYFCS has been at the heart of what is really happening in the families and homes in Worcester County by reaching the people who need help. Through programs that include comprehensive counseling, Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA), Family Connections and youth programs, WYFCS is increasing awareness about mental health, advocating for abused and neglected children, providing community resources and education, and truly making a difference in the lives of the people in the community.
Counseling
Many people seek therapy when something dramatic has occurred in our life or when an issue or behavior is impacting our, or a loved one’s, ability to enjoy and live our lives to the fullest. We all need a little help from time to time in dealing with the challenges that life brings our way.
At Worcester Youth and Family Counseling Services, Inc. we offer therapy to all age groups ranging from toddlers to senior citizens. Our team of professional and licensed therapists provides assessments and treatment services for individuals, groups, families, and couples in a variety of disciplines.
CASA
Our goal is simple – to speak up for every child’s right to a safe and permanent home.“Court Appointed Special Advocates” a volunteer-based program, passionately advocates for abused and neglected children who are caught up in the court and child welfare maze because they are unable to live safely at home. Imagine what it would be like to lose your parents, not because of something you did, but because they can’t—or won’t—take care of you. In an overburdened social welfare system, abused and neglected children often slip through the cracks. Into these vulnerable children’s lives come dozens of strangers: police, foster parents, therapists, social workers, judges, lawyers, and more. Hopefully, one of these strangers is a CASA volunteer because they provide that one constant person that children need in order to thrive
Youth Programs
WYFCS operates there youth programs. The Berlin Youth Club is a program designed to offer meaningful cultural, educational, and wellness experiences to children during out of school time.
SAGES (Strengthening Adolescent Girls with Education and Support) is an innovative program that helps adolescent girls who are experiencing difficulty or conflict in their homes or schools. The goal of the program is to enhance the abilities of each girl, so they are able to take full advantage of their talents, academic interests, career pursuits, and relationships.
The transition from childhood to adulthood, beginning with early adolescence, is an exciting and challenging period impacting individual youth at different rates and manifesting in different behaviors. For some young men this can be a time of great social stress and a struggle to understand their place at home, school, and in the community. It is important for them to develop both the self-confidence and sense of responsibility required to make the best decisions during this transformation period. SABERS embraces the individuality of each youth creating unique programs balancing the desired goals for each young man with those of the group.
Career Assistance Program
Many young people today are unsure of their career path and struggle finding jobs that match their strengths. Some are not interested in college and prefer to start their career after high school. Others are interested in college but don’t know how to prepare themselves for academia.
Worcester Youth and Family Counseling Services (WYFCS) helps young people between the ages of 18 and 24 who are unemployed, underemployed and not enrolled in school. Also included in this population are those under the age of 25 that lack a fixed, regular, and adequate nighttime residence.
